What must the activity include for it to be carried out?
To carry out this activity, preparations for items to be taken on the trip must be done beforehand. Read and learn the tactile signs before the trip. For this trip, we need the following:
- Ticket for the underground / companion pass
- Jacket, hat, gloves, and shoes (These must be available for both the child and the adult at the child's wardrobe)
- Two chairs at the child's wardrobe
- Backpack with equipment for the trip, including: water bottle, seat cushion, and something good to eat, such as biscuits.
Objectives for the activity:
Take the metro to a specific destination, go for a walk, and then take the metro back to school.
Working method/activity:
To familiarise the child with different modes of transport, we take the metro to a set destination every week. The journey begins with a metro ride, followed by a half-hour walk (with a break for drinks and biscuits), before concluding with the metro ride back to school. Before boarding the metro, we prepare for the trip. We talk about sitting on the tube. The tube says 'Doors opening' shhh 'Doors closing' shhh.
The child sits on a chair in the cloakroom, while you sit directly opposite in another chair. This provides a good position for communicating with tactile signs. We put on jackets, hats, and gloves, commenting on these with tactile signs along the way. Dress the child first, then yourself.
The most time-consuming part of this activity is the metro ride. Therefore, it's important to talk about the metro before we travel, during the journey, and afterwards. Use tactile signs like metro, together, and sitting on the metro.
We walk together to the station. While waiting, we can discuss that we need to wait for the metro. When it arrives, we can talk about getting onto the metro. Comment on the sounds along the way. One stop before we need to get off, we start preparing the child that we'll soon stop and get off the metro. Once we've alighted, we talk about the metro journey being finished. Now it's time for a walk in the woods.
Comment on what happens along the way in the woods. Find a spot along the path for some drinks and biscuits. Prepare the child for what's going to happen. When the walk in the woods is over, comment that the walk in the woods is finished. Now we need to wait for the metro.
When it arrives, we can talk about needing to 'get in' and sit on the metro. Comment on the sounds along the way. One stop before we need to get off, we prepare the child that we'll soon stop and get off the metro. Once we've alighted, we talk about the metro journey being finished. Now it's time to return to school.
Once back, we sit in the cloakroom in the same spot as before. Here we talk about being back at school now and we're finished with the metro trip. We take off jackets, shoes, hats, and gloves. Use tactile signs.
